The Callback
Remember the small thing they told you and they’ll remember you.
What it is
You remember a detail someone mentioned weeks ago and bring it up again. Relationship researcher Harry Reis has shown how much “perceived responsiveness” matters: feeling understood and cared about is one of the strongest drivers of closeness. A callback is responsiveness made visible.
Spot it
Someone remembers everything about you, but only brings it up just before they want something. Or they use your private details to make a pitch feel personal: “I know you’ve been stressed about money, so this is perfect for you.”
Counter it
Notice the timing. Real care shows up when nothing is being asked. If your details only appear as a lead-in to a request, the “care” is a tool.
