The Open Gate
Corner anyone and they’ll fight. Always leave them a way out.
What it is
When people feel trapped, with no way to back down, they fight harder, even against their own interests. Give them a way out that keeps their dignity, and they’re far more likely to take it. Winning by humiliation is a loss that takes longer to show up.
Spot it
Someone leaves you no way out: all-or-nothing, “admit it or else.” Cornered, you dig in. That’s often what they wanted, so they can call you unreasonable.
Counter it
Make your own exit: “I’m not making a decision under pressure.” Step out of the corner and come back when you’re calm.
