The Higher Authority
“I’d love to, but my boss won’t allow it.”
What it is
You point to an absent decision-maker so you never have to concede directly. It is a classic negotiation move. It deflects pressure and buys time, because nobody can argue with someone who isn’t in the room.
Spot it
An invisible owner, partner or “family” who always says no at the last step, and is never available to talk.
Counter it
Ask upfront: “Are you the one who decides? If not, who is?” Then ask for their contact, or put the request in writing to both of them. A real owner can answer an email.
