The Hot and Cold

Uncertain rewards hook harder than certain ones.

This is a pattern of control, not an influence tactic. It’s here so you can name it and get out of it.

What it is

Someone is warm, then cold, then warm again, with no clear pattern. Psychologists call this intermittent reinforcement. Rewards that come unpredictably are the hardest habits to break. It’s how slot machines keep people pulling. In relationships, it is a core part of how people get stuck with someone who hurts them, sometimes called a trauma bond. It’s the “Devalue” step of the Love Bomb cycle (card 88), running on repeat.

Why it hooks people

The warm days feel amazing because of the cold ones. You keep chasing the version of them you got that one good weekend. The relief when they come back feels like love.

Spot it

  • You can’t predict how they’ll treat you on any given day.
  • Most of your feelings about them are relief, not joy.
  • The good moments come right after you start to pull away.
  • Friends say you seem anxious around them.

Counter it

Judge the average, not the best day. Write down how they treat you for a month, good and bad. Look at the pattern on paper. Reliable people are steady. If you feel hooked, tell someone you trust. A pattern is easier to break with a witness.
