The Future Fake

Big plans for tomorrow keep you quiet about today.

This is a pattern of control, not an influence tactic. It’s here so you can name it and get out of it.

What it is

Someone paints a vivid picture of your future together: the house, the trip, the wedding, the promotion. The plans never quite arrive, but they keep you hoping. When you finally walk away, they come back with more promises. That return is sometimes called hoovering, as in sucking you back in. Reading this means watching what people do, not what they plan.

Why it hooks people

You fall for the future, not the person in front of you. Leaving feels like giving up the dream, not just the relationship.

Spot it

  • Detailed plans very early, or right after you’ve raised a problem.
  • Promises with no date, no booking, no first step.
  • New promises appear the moment you pull away.
  • An ex comes back with a big gesture but no real change.

Counter it

Ask for the first step, not the dream. “Great. When do we book?” Then watch for a month. If the future is real, it will show up in the calendar. If an ex comes back, judge them by what has actually changed, not what they say will.
