The Mirror
Become their reflection and they’ll warm to you without knowing why.
What it is
You match someone’s posture, pace, energy and words. Psychologists Tanya Chartrand and John Bargh called it the chameleon effect: we tend to feel more rapport with people who subtly mimic us. Later studies are mixed: the effect is real but smaller and less reliable than pop-psych claims. It works because “like me” reads as “safe.”
Spot it
Your gestures and pet phrases keep showing up in their behavior, a beat after you use them. You feel unusually “in sync” with someone you’ve just met who also happens to want something.
Counter it
Change your posture or pace on purpose and watch whether they follow. If they do, enjoy the warmth, then judge the offer on its facts, not the vibe.
