The Quick Confession
Admit your mistake before they can use it and you take the weapon out of their hand.
What it is
When you own a mistake quickly and plainly, before anyone confronts you, it’s hard for them to stay angry. You control the story, and you show you’re trustworthy. Hiding it and getting caught is always worse.
Spot it
Someone confesses a small mistake loudly and quickly, so that a bigger one stays hidden. Or they confess before you’ve noticed, and use it to set the tone: “I already said sorry, so...”
Counter it
Accept the apology for what it covers. Then ask, calmly, “Is there anything else I should know?” A confession isn’t a full report.
