The Common Enemy
Nothing bonds two strangers faster than a shared opponent.
What it is
You find something you both dislike and stand on the same side against it. Shared annoyance creates a fast “us.” Psychologists have long noted that groups pull together when they face an outside problem. It’s quicker than finding things you both love.
Spot it
Someone you barely know is very quick to agree that a person you’re annoyed with is awful. They stoke it. “Honestly, she sounds toxic.” Ask why they want you angrier.
Counter it
Ask yourself: if we took away the thing we both hate, would we still have anything in common? If someone keeps feeding you an enemy, especially a person in your life, step back.
